Long weekends are the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family for a spontaneous celebration. Whether you’re a seasoned host or someone new to throwing parties, here are seven (EIGHT!) secrets from the pros at SHOT to help you plan an unforgettable spur-of-the-moment gathering that you and your guests will never forget!
1. Texts Instead of Invitations
When throwing a spur-of-the-moment or last minute party, there’s no time to create invitations and wait for RSVPs. When Leigh threw her last minute Really Desperate Housewives Murder party a few weekends ago, it was all done through text. Instant delivery, easy RSVPs, and those who said they could come were then added to a group chat. There were 4 days before the party, and we used that group chat to organise food, talk last minute costume ideas and get excited! Also, keep the guest list small and manageable. A more intimate gathering allows you to spend quality time with each guest and reduces the stress of catering to a large crowd. Invite close friends and family who enjoy spontaneous get-togethers and can bring their positive energy (and perhaps a drink and a dish) to the party.
2. What Can You Bring? I’m Glad You Asked!
When these guests ask what they can bring, tell them to bring something that is a favourite – a favourite food or a favourite wine to share with everyone! They feel they are contributing and getting to talk about their favourite things, and you have less to do in the way of party prep!
3. Create a Festive Atmosphere with Minimal Effort
A festive atmosphere doesn’t require elaborate decorations. Use what you have on hand to create a cozy and inviting space. String lights, candles, and fresh flowers can instantly elevate the mood. For example, a “Summer Escape” theme could include beach towels, seashells, and a playlist of tropical tunes. Remember, the goal is to set a fun and relaxed tone, so don’t overthink it! Leigh went on Amazon and got some light-up beach balls and a solar, colour-changing flamingo to set the summer vibes, we have included the links if you love the pics!
4. The Perfect Music and Twinkle Lights
Music and lighting are key to setting the mood for any party. We are big on twinkle lights here at SHOT – there’s really no party situation where they aren’t the perfect (and so easy!) decoration. The right music is also paramount! If you don’t have time to make a playlist, use a streaming service to find one that fits your vibe. As for lighting, avoid harsh overhead lights. Instead, opt for dimmed lights, fairy lights, or candles to create a warm, welcoming glow that encourages conversation and relaxation. Here at SHOT, we consider music a decoration – make sure the music is playing when the guests arrive to immediately set everyone at ease and get the party started!
5. Plan a Place for Pics!
To help capture those long weekend memories you’re creating with your people, consider a spot to take some fun selfies. At The Really Desperate Housewives Murder party, those light-up beach balls and a red carpet Leigh had on hand became THE place for everyone to take some really amazing pictures, and after the party, we all shared our photos in the group chat (You can see a lot of these on our social media!)
6. Choose One Feature Activity
For instance, making s’mores around the fire, or even just having a bubbly toast to the end of summer!
7. Make Cleanup Easy with Disposable or Reusable Items
A big deterrent for hosting last-minute parties is the thought of cleaning up afterwards. Make your cleanup easier by using (recyclable or compostable) disposable plates, cups, and cutlery, or consider using reusable items that can go straight into the dishwasher. Set up designated trash and recycling bins to encourage guests to dispose of their waste. This simple preparation allows you to enjoy your party without the looming dread of a major cleanup.
Bonus Tip: Add a Themed Twist with a Murder Mystery Game
We have so many clients who actually decide AT THE PARTY to solve a murder mystery. They pick their theme and download it right there, without any prep. It’s easier than you think, and will help transform your spur-of-the-moment long weekend party into a night no one will ever forget!
Don’t let this sweet end of summer weekend pass without taking the opportunity to create one more memory with your favourite people! Gather your friends, prepare some snacks, and get ready for a fun-filled celebration!
Murder mystery party tip!
Get the package that fits your CONFIRMED guests, not the “maybes” and “on-the-fencers”. We live this hosting life, and know that not everyone can firm up an RSVP (and let’s face it, some are just flaky… yup, we are just dropping truth today…). The packages are designed to have everyone, even if they aren’t a suspect themselves, be fully involved with the mystery, so don’t worry about anyone feeling like they aren’t involved. Trust us – most times the Sleuths have more fun than the Suspects.
