should be kept secret as much as possible—without lying! If they are asked directly about the Hide info, they have to fess up and answer honestly, but they can be vague!
Suspects and sleuths alike should visit the Play! Site before the party. It gives important information like the theme of the mystery, suspect lists, victim profiles, and tips on how the mystery party game works.
Step 5: Let The Investigation Begin!
The mystery party begins with the Announcement of Murder, and you receive both an MP3 file and a transcript, so you can start the mystery game with either an audio file to set the scene or have someone read the transcript of the Announcement of Murder. I always like to take a few minutes to introduce the suspects or have them introduce themselves as well!
Then, guests will begin moving around the party, talking to each other, sharing clues, and questioning the suspects.
During a game like The Phantom of the Theatre, guests could also be assigned roles like actors, directors, or stagehands, adding another layer of fun to the mingle. Their roles can influence how they interact with others and uncover important clues.
After a certain amount of time (usually 1 hour to 90 minutes, depending on how many guests and suspects you have), accusations can be cast. I love to ask if anyone wants to share who they accused and why. This is a guest’s time to shine, showing everyone what they discovered and how they came up with their accusation. It can be a lot of fun and often goes on for quite a while at some events!
Step 6: Reveal the Killer!
The highlight of the night will, of course, be the Big Reveal. Once your guests have cast their accusations, it’s time to reveal who, among you, is the killer. Gather everyone together, dim the lights, and use some dramatic sound effects (like thunder or ghostly whispers) for an added Halloween thrill.

After the Big Reveal, have some prizes ready! We love to have prizes for Best Sleuth, Best Suspect, and Best Dressed (we have certificates for these winners in your Host Materials). I also like to throw the Accusation Forms for everyone who got it right into a hat and draw a winner for a prize. Then, I do the same for everyone who didn’t get it right.
