Halloween is the ideal occasion to blend a delicious dinner with a murder mystery that will keep your guests on the edge of their seats. For an unforgettable experience, throw a Shot In The Dark Mysteries Interactive Halloween Murder Mystery Dinner Party, a format that perfectly combines the thrills of investigation with the warmth of a sit-down dinner. Here’s how to make it spooky, fun, and interactive while using one of Shot In The Dark Mysteries’ murder mystery dinner party games.

How to Host a Halloween Murder Mystery Dinner Party

Step 1: Choose the Perfect Halloween Murder Mystery Dinner Package

For an interactive dinner party, you’ll want a murder mystery format that unfolds over multiple courses, but keeps the host in mind. Throwing a dinner party creates an extra challenge for the host, and all of our Dinner Party mystery games keep you, the host, in mind Some fantastic Halloween-themed options include:

These mystery options bring the perfect amount of Halloween chills and thrills, while ensuring your dinner party remains structured and interactive in that signature SHOT way!

Step 2: Send Out Invitations and Gather RSVPs

Once you’ve chosen your game, it’s time to send out the invitations and gather your RSVPs, so you know in advance which version of your chosen mystery you should purchase. You can get digital invitations for all of our mystery games here!

Sending out these type of “Save The Date” invitations, it gives your guests a chance to get excited and start thinking about the theme while you gather all the RSVPs from your guest list.

For instance, in The Phantom of the Theatre, guests could come dressed in Victorian or theatrical costumes. In A Vampire Murder, they could start planning their Gothic or Renaissance attire, with plenty of fake blood, fangs, and eerie makeup.

Shot In The Dark Mysteries provides “Suspect Guides and Suspect Instructions” for you to send to each player, which can be emailed in advance, as well as the “Play! Site”, which you can give to your non-suspect guests so everyone can check out the theme of the mystery party, read up on the suspects and even look at a brief Victim Profile to get ready for the party. Giving your guests time to prepare helps them fully immerse in their characters, which is crucial for making the mystery dinner party a success.

Step 3: Set the Scene with Halloween Decor

Since your dinner party is Halloween-themed, you’ll want to create an atmosphere that reflects the mystery at hand. I’m including some of my theme-specific favourites from Amazon – they may give us a small kick back for sending you their way, just a heads up. A dimly lit dining room with candles, skulls, cobwebs and fog machines can transform your home into the setting of a murder scene. The fog machine I linked is the one I ordered for our Spookeasy promo video and it worked just fine.

I have been talking about these smart bulbs constantly and highly recommend them. They are perfect for setting the scene, and you can change them as the mystery goes on – for instance, using deep reds during The Big Reveal, a gradient between oranges and reds, or even a cold blue for The Haunted Island Murders. The possibilities are endless, and really easy to set up. We even sync’d them to flash to the beat of Thriller for Trick or Treaters last year.

If you’re hosting A Vampire Murder, consider using Gothic-themed table settings with dark candles, ornate goblets, and velvet tablecloths. For The Phantom of the Theatre, set up a theatrical stage area where characters can introduce themselves in dramatic fashion. You could hang old playbills, place spotlights around the room, or even have a ghostly apparition (using a simple projection or lighting effect) appear in the background. For Murder at the Seance, a Seance table is a must, complete with Crystal Ball (which is, actually, the murder weapon for that mystery).

Step 4: Structure the Evening Around the Mystery

An Interactive Dinner Party Murder Mystery from Shot In The Dark Mysteries is structured in stages, with different courses of your dinner aligning with key moments in the investigation. Here’s a typical timeline:

Cocktail Hour & Introductions: Start with a cocktail hour where guests can introduce themselves in character, using the information in their Suspect Description. This can be casual and mingling, or you can do it in a more official way by having each person introduce themselves in their character to the group en masse.

Appetizers & The Announcement of Murder: Once seated for appetizers, play the Announcement of Murder audio file, or have someone read the transcript aloud. This is when the murder is revealed, and the investigation officially begins. Guests will start discussing their alibis and sharing their “Share” information from their suspect guides.

Main Course & Investigations: The main course is where the mystery really heats up. As guests dine, they will question one another about their whereabouts, potential motives, and what they witnessed. Encourage your guests to dig deep, using the provided Notes Pages to track clues and suspects.

One-on-One Investigations: After the main course, guests can get up and conduct one-on-one investigations. This is a chance for sleuths to privately question the suspects, piecing together clues without everyone else overhearing. Set a timer to keep the investigations lively and fast-paced!

Dessert & Accusations: As dessert is served, it’s time for guests to make their accusations. Each guest fills out an Accusation Form, identifying who they think is the killer and why. This builds excitement as the final accusations are made and shared with the group. I personally love to give everyone the chance to tell the others who they accused and why. It creates such a fun dialogue with the group and gives everyone their moment to shine and show how truly clever they are! Just wait until everyone has handed in their accusation though, so no one can make a last-second change of who they think the killer is!

The Big Reveal: Finally, it’s time for The Big Reveal. Whether you choose to play the audio file or read the transcript, this moment will reveal the killer and explain how the crime unfolded. The suspense will be palpable as everyone listens to see if they made the right guess!

Share Information

is meant to be blurted out to anyone and everyone—it’s meant to be shared. It’s also a great way for suspects to divert suspicion away from themselves!

Hide Information

should be kept secret as much as possible—without lying! If they are asked directly about the Hide info, they have to fess up and answer honestly, but they can be vague!

Step 5: Add Halloween-Themed Extras

To take your Halloween dinner party to the next level, consider adding themed extras like:

A Costume Contest: Reward the best vampire, ghost, or theatre actor at the end of the night. You can give out small prizes, like spooky candles, a Halloween-themed trophy, or even a gift card for a haunted house experience. We are HUGE fans of costume contests, and have clients who have created a fun trophy they have created that gets passed around to the winner each year, fully engraved with the previous years winners’ names!

Halloween Photo Booth: Set up a photo booth with eerie backdrops, props like fake knives, vampire teeth, or ghostly masks, and have guests take character photos throughout the night. It’s a fun way to capture memories of the event and post them on social media (make sure to tag us so we can brag you up! @shotinthedarkmysteries)

Pumpkin Carving Station: If time allows, guests could carve or decorate pumpkins before or after the mystery. The pumpkin designs could even reflect clues from the mystery—adding an extra interactive element to the night.

Step 6: Wrapping up and Awarding Prizes

As the night winds down and the killer is revealed, it’s time to give out prizes, if you have chosen to do this! It’s not necessary for the mystery game, but a lot of hosts do, and because of this, Shot In The Dark Mysteries provides certificates for the Best Sleuth, Best Suspect, and Best Dressed in the materials, so be sure to have these on hand, ready to fill out with your winners’ names.

Additionally, you could offer Halloween-themed prizes like decorative skulls, spooky candles, or a Shot In The Dark Mysteries gift card for the guest who correctly solved the mystery. Prizes add an extra layer of fun and encourage everyone to get competitive during the game!

Tips for a Successful Halloween Interactive Dinner Party

Timing is Key: Make sure the timing of each phase of the mystery aligns with your dinner courses. It’s best to give guests around 30 minutes during the one-on-one investigations, with the entire evening lasting around 3-4 hours.

Set the Atmosphere Early: Start setting the spooky vibe from the moment guests arrive. Dim lights, eerie background music, and themed decorations will immediately immerse everyone in the Halloween murder mystery.

Pre-Prepare Dessert: Since you’ll want to participate fully during the one-on-one investigations, choose a dessert that can be prepared in advance. This allows you to focus on the game instead of being stuck in the kitchen.
