The year is 1692 and Salem Town is in the midst of what would become the most famous witch hunt in American history. Many residents of Salem share a dark, damp cell where they sit in the dirt awaiting their trial, with nothing else to do but contemplate their fates.
Ann Putnam, a major accuser in the witch hunt, is berating the other inmates when, suddenly, there is a blinding flash of light and a deafening bang! By the time the captives regained their sight and the smoke dissipated, Ann Putnam lay dead beside the now open cell door.
Under threat of everyone being hung at Gallows Hill that very night, those accused must find the person responsible for Ann Putnam’s death. Was it an act of witchcraft? Are there witches in the cell, and if so, who? And who killed Goodwife Putnam?
This mystery is a 3/5 on the Angel Rating Scale. The characters, accusations and certain events are taken straight from historical records and transcripts of the actual witch trials of Salem. We have, of course, taken creative liberty in the plot, and changed certain details out of respect for our wonderfully culturally diverse clients.
This mystery contains mentions of witchcraft, natural healing, fits, alcohol/drinking, cigars, potions, an affair, illegitimate children, and more. Not suitable for conservative audiences. Church groups – don’t even think about this one ;)

Great time! This was our second murder mystery party and it generates huge fanfare each time. The mysteries are set up to be challenging but not overly challenging and its great that everyone can participate without knowing who the killer is beforehand! This company is great to work with and is always accommodating to questions.
The best party – EVER! Shot in the Dark Mysteries made the planning so easy that we could focus on making our basement look like an 80s prom. Our theme was “Chiller Thriller” and we had a blast decorating. Every person that came said they had so much fun and wanted to host their own parties. The idea that no knows who the killer is works so well. Thanks Shot in the Dark Mysteries for providing an easy, fabulous way to have fun with friends!
I love Shot in the Dark mysteries! They made so many of our parties (birthdays, new years, just because!) extra special by getting our friends engaged in solving the crimes! They’re such a great value, and even our friends that aren’t extroverts can get into being a character and sleuthing. I also love that I am able to host and participate in the murder mystery! So much fun!!
